Participation of students from “St. Paisii Hilendarski” Secondary School, Plovdiv as аmbassadors of inclusive education in the staging of “The Singing Traffic Light”

On 22 October 2019 we held the eighth workshop with pupils from the first grade of “St. Paisii Hilendarski” Secondary School, Plovdiv together with the State Puppet Theater of Plovdiv. Pupils with motor impairments, hyperactive ones, and pupils without disabilities took part in it. All pupils were wearing reflective vests with the logo of the project.

         The staging of “The Singing Traffic Light” was presented with bright visual aids. The crossroad, the streets, the sidewalks, and the pedestrian paths were recreated realistically and this strongly attracted the attention of the children with hyperactive behavior. The actors used a traffic light with real lights, which affected the senses and perceptions of the two hyperactive children. The light-sound signaling in the recreation of certain situations helped those children to perceive them and, subsequently, to realize the perceived knowledge and skills in real-life situations.

         At the end of the play, all children were involved in a role-play situation. The child with a physical disability was highly motivated and was able to participate completely together with the other children.

         The workshop lasted 40 minutes, but it seemed that the children wanted more of it.

         The event was organized by Ms. Grudeva, Ms. Ikimova and first grade teachers as the eighth workshop within the project in order to raise pupils’ awareness of safe behavior on the road, crossing different types of intersections, the benefits of teamwork, the good result of co-operation and mutual assistance among classmates, as well as the successful participation and inclusion of students with disabilities.
